Sandman and the Personification of Dreams - Consciousness, the Damasian Mind, and Belonging

When I close my eyes, I don’t cease to exist.
I keep being, even as my body relaxes and my mind drifts between images and sensations. In that instant, I am Dream — not as a character, but as a presence that runs through every human being. I am memory, imagination, and expectation condensed. I am what keeps me belonging to the world, even when reality feels suspended.

It is in this subtle space between wakefulness and sleep that I realize how much Sandman, the Netflix series, speaks directly about me: about how I am imprisoned, released, and rebuilt by the dreams that inhabit me.

The Original Paradigm: Dreaming as a Human Right

In the narrative of The Sandman, Dream (or Morpheus) is not a god, but something far older: the personification of the act of dreaming itself.
Before the Old World’s domestication — with rigid norms, religious dogmas, and hierarchies — dreaming was lived as a natural right. Amerindian peoples understood dreams as an extension of waking life: a language of the Body-Territory, where belonging was not separated between night and day.

Here steps in the avatar Brainlly, reminding us: “Dreaming is belonging without borders. It is living the collective within the individual.”

The Old World’s Domestication

But, as the book The Dawn of Everything (Graeber & Wengrow, 2021) shows, the Old World learned to use dreams as instruments of domestication. Dream interpretation became dogma, religious authority, and social control. Dreaming ceased to be free belonging and was turned into prophecy, judgment, or threat.

Sandman mirrors this in the imprisonment of Morpheus in 1916: when collective consciousness is captured, the realm of dreams deteriorates.
This captivity represents what we call Zone 3: when our mind is controlled by external ideologies, cutting off the free flow of fruition and metacognition.

Sleep Science and Evidence

From neuroscience, the episode of “dream personification” connects directly to the N1 stage of sleep — the transition between wakefulness and rest.

• EEG shows an increase in theta waves (4–7 Hz), marking the start of spontaneous imagination.
  
  

• NIRS shows a progressive decrease in oxygen consumption in the prefrontal cortex, freeing space for uncontrolled mental imagery.
  
  

• This stage is fragile: a small interruption is enough to lose the dream and return to wakefulness.
  
  

In the Damasian Mind, this is where interoception (inner sensations) and proprioception (the body’s position) begin to loosen from the “tensional self” of daily life, allowing the emergence of what we call Free Belonging.

Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3

• Zone 1: the body still holds postural and visceral tensions, the responsibilities of the day.
  
  

• Zone 2: entering N1, those tensions partially release and Belonging begins to flow.
  
  

• Zone 3: when external forces (ideologies, fear, algorithms) hijack the process, preventing the dream from being a space of freedom.
  
  

Sandman shows us that the dream can only be restored when we recognize this dynamic: freeing ourselves from Zone 3 to return to the creative flow of Zone 2.

Synthesis

Sandman, at its core, reminds us that dreaming is existing beyond norms, and that every human carries within the right to build worlds.
In science, this is validated by the study of sleep stages and consciousness. In Amerindian paradigms, by the Body-Territory. In our concepts, by the Damasian Mind and the Zones of Belonging.

Or, as the avatar DANA would say:
“Dreaming is the DNA of freedom. Every night is a ritual of belonging to life.”
